Posture Correction Q & A

What is posture?

Posture is the position of a person’s body when sitting or standing, including the position of each body part in relation to the others. Good posture is when there is balance between opposing groups of muscles and the body is able to stand erect with all joints, bones and muscles in correct alignment. Good posture is important regardless of the position the body is in such as sitting down, standing, lying down, squatting, and while in motion. When opposing muscle groups are balanced through both the length and tension, the body functions at its best and the joints remain in their proper positions. This means the joints are aligned vertically and horizontally, enabling the body to function optimally.

How can a chiropractor help?

The chiropractors at Bailey Family Chiropractic perform thorough physical evaluations including posture, mobility, range of motion, and X-rays if medically necessary. The doctor will also compare the person’s postural alignment with a model of ideal alignment. Using this information, the chiropractor will design a personalized treatment plan to correct the patient’s postural issues. The chiropractor provides spinal manipulations, tractioning, massage, and exercise programs to correct a person’s posture. The whole body is taken into consideration so that improvements to posture can help to improve other aspects of the patient’s physical wellbeing.

What risks are associated with poor posture?

Poor posture causes problems because an imbalance in the tension and length relationship of the muscle groups can pull joints out of place resulting in more pain in the joints and msucles. For example, poor posture causes the pelvis and the load bearing joints to move from their proper position. An array of negative side effects can result, including ankle, back, shoulder, neck, and knee pain and it can can also impact the organs. Poor posture can also affect breathing, growth, and mobility. When an imbalance is caused the muscles designed to carry weight can atrophy since they aren’t used the way they should and the opposite muscles become too strong, pulling the body out of alignment.
